Darlene Rampasaud

Well, I am 36 yrs old. When I was 33 - in 2001, I had a bump on my right hip. I was told it was nothing to worry about and that it was just a lipoma. My doctor scooped it out and said everything was fine. In 2002 it grew back. I went back to the same doctor but he had retired so his associate performed the second surgery they both concurred that it was lipoma still and when you don't get all of it, sometimes it grows back. In 2003 it grew back again. I went back to the same surgeon and he took it out the third time. Finally it dawned on him to sent the pathology specimens from all three procedures to Emory University and they concluded that it had been liposarcoma all along(high grade). So I had to find an surgical oncologist, which was difficult because not many knew much about it. When I did, I had to have my fourth and hopefully final "wide resection" surgery(they had to take more tissue than they had ever taken-even healthy tissue, to make sure that they got it all). During that procedure, a plastic surgeon performed a thigh lift to close the gaping hole. When I was well enough I had to start a series of radiation treatments. When the radiation was done, they said I have a small nodule on my lung. I was told that the most common place that my type of sarcoma shows up is in the lung. Now get cat scans every 4-6 months to be monitored.
